History beckons in the World Cup semi-finals

Cricketing history will be made at Eden Park in Auckland on Tuesday when New Zealand and South Africa get the semi-final stage of the tournament underway.

Neither country has ever managed to make it past this hurdle to a World Cup final, so it will be new ground for one of them after Tuesday’s match in front of what’s sure to be a packed crowd.

Nine times these two teams have previously made it to this stage – six for New Zealand (1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007, 2011) and three for South Africa (1992, 1999, 2007).

The competition, which began back on February 14, is down to the final four, with India to take on Australia in the other semi-final on Thursday.

New Zealand, known as the Black Caps, has been perhaps the most impressive side all tournament long.

The Kiwis strolled past Sri Lanka, Scotland, England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh during the group stage, with their only struggle a thrilling one-wicket win over fellow co-hosts Australia.

They then dismantled the West Indies in the quarter-finals, led by Martin Guptill’s record-breaking 237 not out.

With its chill, yet upbeat tracks, Malaysian indie artist Froya is set to make bodies shimmy and heads bop.

Froya’s first album comes out this year, led with its single “Dawn”. The brains and voice behind Froya is Michelle lee.

migme: What does Froya mean? And tell us something about you.
Lee: Froya means goddess of love and beauty. I just thought of my stage name. I used to be a bedroom singer/songwriter. (laughs)

What does that mean?
That means I was shy. I normally just hide in my room and write songs there. And then I went to college and I pursued music and after that I got a job as a full-time composer, writing songs for TV commercials and film scoring. I’ve been writing a lot of my own material and stuff—since I was 19 years old.

How did you get to performing publicly from being a “bedroom singer/songwriter”?
I enjoyed production and writing songs. When my friends heard about my stuff they pushed me to go out and perform. The more I performed, the more gigs I got, then it became my side career.

How long have you been performing?
I have been performing 3 years as Froya.

Can you describe how your music sounds?
I would say indie pop. (But) I don’t like to narrow it down, I believe that my sound will evolve as I grow older. I don’t really like to be categorized as vogue or indie. I really like to keep things fresh and keep it open.

What is your musical influence?
A lot… too many. I used to listen to a lot of jazz back then. And then after that I was into trip hop, electronic music, and then vogue, and then a lot of indie.

Do you have any specific artist you look up to?
I really look up to Imogen Heap. Imogen Heap is really cool because she’s a singer/songwriter and producer, and she mixes her own stuff. Her album won the Album of the Year Grammy. I really look up to female producers.

My name is Md. Ahad Al Alam, and I’m 23 years old. My hometown is Manikganj, Dhaka in Bangladesh. I am in my final year, studying Fashion and Design at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology (SMUCT).

How did your mig username come about?

My mother loves to call me sobuz. It means green in Bangla language. She likes both nature and the color green.

I am known in my neighborhood as ST. My friends used to call me green and nature as well. After I told them that you get oxygen from nature, and oxygen is transparent, my friends started calling me Transparent Green. My sister @sinboo was the one who suggested the initials ST—S for Sobuz, T for transparent.

Rinni Idol’s backing track fail doesn’t derail her

If there ever was a doubt that success has turned Rinni Wulandari (@rinniwulandari) into a manufactured, overprocessed starlet, yesterday she showed what real performers do when things go wrong.

During a #musicmigup, the Indonesian Idol Season 4 winner was onstage in a bar in Singapore dancing and singing to her single “Independent Girl”. Just as she was getting into the groove before a big chorus, the backing track unceremoniously screeched to a halt.

If she was flustered, she only let that show for a moment. Side-eyeing her crew backstage, she motioned for the other singer’s guitarist to come up on stage, and announced to the tense audience that she would be abandoning the songs planned. Instead, she was now going unplugged with a number of covers, and with a guitarist she’s never met before.

The young singer’s stage experience really shone through. Powering through “Someone Like You” by Adele and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys, she managed to wow the crowd and show them what an Indonesian Idol is made of.
