Marvel Comics on Tuesday announced that a new series of Thor
would put Mjölnir, the character’s mighty hammer, into the hands of a
female protagonist. The blond, aggressive male character we’ve long
associated with Thor through the comics and the movies is no longer
worthy to hold the weapon. According to the ancient mythology from which
the the comic derives its backstory, the powers and persona of Thor are
embodied in this hammer - therefore anyone who picks it up and is
worthy to wield it will in effect become Thor. Marvel will publish the
new series of Thor in October and is not giving too much away
about the specifics of the plot or just who exactly the new Thor is,
other than the fact that she is not merely a female counterpart to Thor
(like what Supergirl is to Superman).
"And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!” Marvel editor Wil Moss says in a statement on the company’s website.
This comes on the back of news that another legendary comic character, Archie Andrews, would be killed off in the final edition of Life With Archie.
