The latest analysis of the #MH17
wreckage has revealed that the aircraft was brought down by a missile
that exploded in front of it, creating a blast of shrapnel that ripped
through the plane’s body.
According to a New York Times report, the warhead was likely from the SA-11 family of missiles, which are designed not to directly hit targets, but to detonate nearby so as to damage the target with a cloud of shrapnel. In the case of MH17, the missile likely exploded about 100 to 300 feet away from the plane, and the 46 pounds of explosives within the missile were sent out of its body. The smaller bits of shrapnel struck the airplane in many areas, damaging critical parts such as its engines and wings.
The analysis was carried out by security analyst IHS Jane’s. The analyst made these inferences based on the numerous uniform holes found on the aircraft’s body, which indicated how it was damaged before coming down.
The Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a passenger flight form Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed on July 17, 2014, after getting hit by a missile. The Boeing 777-200ER airliner was carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew members, and went down about 40 km from the Ukraine-Russia border.
